Dongfang Meiren (東方美人) translates to Oriental or Eastern Beauty, it is heavily oxidized / fermented oolong that originated in Hsinchu County in Taiwan. Its unique taste and aroma comes from jassids (small leafhopper) biting on the leaves causing enzymatic reaction within the tea plant. For this reason tea harvest takes place close to summer, as tea farmers wait for tea plants to get bug bitten.
Traditionally processed Oriental Beauty is slowly being replaced by modern, lighter processed version. It wasn’t easy to find traditionally made tea that will tick all the boxes, but looking for it was definitely worth it. Beautiful chocolate brown and copper leaves are generously sprinkled with white, furry buds and brewing this tea fills the whole room with floral and fruity, sweet like honey aromas. Brewed tea is very smooth and fruity, with floral notes complemented by subtle cooling sensation. Beautiful tea worthy of its name.
Very enjoyable and relaxing tea, that was perfectly processed and shows why Traditional Oriental Beauty is so popular. Most of well made teas likes to be brewed very hot, but this one likes it a bit gentler at around 90°C
